If you often catch yourself looking up at the sky and wondering whether an alien might visit in your lifetime, you’re not alone. For many scientists, the question isn’t the stuff of science fiction, but a serious concern.
There are tens of billions of planets that have the capacity for life in the Milky Way alone, 11 billion of which are orbiting sun-like stars. So the question is: where the hell are all the aliens?
Scientists are finally starting to get round to answering that question, thanks to a recent discovery. Back in August, scientists announced the discovery of one of these potentially habitable planets. Proxima b is a relatively nearby planet which has the perfect set of conditions to harbour life, and it’s close enough that we could potentially reach it in our lifetime.
Following this discovery, prominent physicist and bonafide genius Steven Hawking has spoken out about what he thinks humanity should do in the event of an alien invasion.
