Flaunting wealth is part and parcel of modern day rap. You’d be hard pressed to find a young rapper who doesn’t appear to lead a flashy lifestyle, complete with luxury cars and expensive jewellery. As hip-hop continues to be a lucrative genre for many artists, many rappers lead a lavish lifestyle which permeates their song lyrics.
Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill is no exception. In his 2011 hit “Ima Boss”, he raps about purchasing the Audemars Piguet watch which retails for thousands of dollars and buying numerous bottles of assumedly expensive alcohol.
Audemars on my wrist, bust-down/ We poppin bottles like I scored the winning touchdown/ Remember me dead broke? Look at me, up now/ I run my city from South Philly back to Uptown
Though he bragged a lot about being rich, he also mentioned having come from humbler beginnings, suggesting he might empathise with those less fortunate than he is.
