A police officer has been stabbed and another individual has been shot outside the House of Commons in central London. It has been reported that gunshots were heard by those inside Westminster.
The deputy speaker of the House of Commons, David Lidington has since announced that Proceedings in the Commons have been suspended following the incident.
The officer in question is apparently injured, having fallen to the ground.
A witness has said that she saw a considerable number of members of the public fleeing the scene, “As I was coming through the doors at Portcullis House, a policeman grabbed someone who was coming in and threw him out. As we were coming through the glass doors I was told by one security guard to get out while another one told me to get in.” she said, “When I got inside I was wondering what the hell was going on and I saw dozens of panicked people running down the street.”
The Telegraph reports that an emergency helicopter arrived on the scene in Parliament Square in the minutes following the incident.
Police are asking members of the public to avoid Parliament Square, Whitehall, Westminster Bridge, Lambeth Bridge, Victoria Street up to the junction with the Broadway and Victoria Embankment up to Embankment Underground Station.
It is also being reported that the attacker mowed down members of the public on Westminster Bridge before subsequently crashing his car and running through the gates of the Palace of Westminster, where he stabbed a police officer.
The situation is currently being treated as a terrorist incident, says the Metropolitan Police.
